Electronic Resources and Literacy Skill in Igbo
Abstract
A few of the available electronic resources for developing Igbo language are the audio compact and digital video discs (DVDs). Both resources are arguably targeted at preschool pupils and have been developed to ease the acquisition of relevant literacy skills in Igbo. Despite the availability of these resources, however, an obvious decline in the mastery of Igbo language persists, especially among school children. This chapter therefore investigates the degree of awareness as well as extent of use of these electronic resources. Specifically, the study explores available Igbo (Niger-Congo) electronic resources required for the development of early literacy in the language and offers some information about their use in the teaching of Igbo. A survey of head teachers and teachers of selected nursery and primary schools in Anambra State of Nigeria indicates that electronic resources are not properly deployed in the teaching of Igbo language. The paper recommends that the use of electronic resources should be encouraged especially at the pre-school, playgroup, and primary levels, to foster Igbo literacy skills in children while at their developmental ages. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s).
